    Vapor condensation on a turbulent liquid interface

    An experimental investigation which seeks the fundamental relationship between the interfacial condensation rate and the parameters which control it when the liquid side is turbulent is discussed. The scaling laws for free-surface condensation are discussed for this case. It is argued that the condensation of cryogenic liquids can, in principle, be simulated in experiments using steam and water. Data are presented for the condensation rate in terms of the dimensionless scaling parameters which involve the fluid properties and the liquid-side turbulence velocity and length scales

    Quantum Walks on Trees with Disorder: Decay, Diffusion, and Localization

    Quantum walks have been shown to have impressive transport properties compared to classical random walks. However, imperfections in the quantum walk algorithm can destroy any quantum mechanical speed-up due to Anderson localization. We numerically study the effect of static disorder on a quantum walk on the glued trees graph. For small disorder, we find that the dominant effect is a type of quantum decay, and not quantum localization. For intermediate disorder, there is a crossover to diffusive transport, while a localization transition is observed at large disorder, in agreement with Anderson localization on the Cayley tree.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figure

    We investigate one-dimensional transverse modulational instability in a non local medium excited with a spatially incoherent source. Employing undoped nematic liquid crystals in a planar pre-tilted configuration, we investigate the role of the spectral broadening induced by incoherence in conjunction with the spatially non local molecular reorientation.     Lipase From Thermoalkalophilic Pseudomonas species as an Additive in Potential Laundry Detergent Formulations

    Lipase isolated from a thermoalkalophilic Pseudomonas species was used as additive to improve the degree of olive oil removal from cotton fabric in the presence of surfactants. The lipase used in this study was found to be more effective with non ionic surfactants as compared to ionic surfactants. In terms of stability, there was no decrease in activity found in the presence of Tween 85, Span 80 and Span 20. Lipase from Pseudomonas species was most active in the presence of Tween 85, Span 80 and Span 20. The application of lipase from Pseudomonas species as an additive in the formulation containing Span 80 has improved oil removal by 36% using the washing system consisting 5 U/mL lipase, at 70 °C for 20 min and 0.8% of Span 80 as surfactant. Considering that lipase from Pseudomonas species is stable in high pH and temperatures in the presence of various surfactants, therefore it is suitable to be incorporated as additives in potential detergent formulations

    This article looks at the quality assurance practices amongst three (3) groups of staff in the School of Distance Education, Universiti Sains Malaysia, i.e. lecturers, resident tutors and support staff. 9 dimensions of the Quality Assurance Practices i.e. Staff Development, Planning, Work Process, Team Work, Prioritise Customers, Performance Evaluation, System For Sending Of Learning Materials, System For Receiving Of Assignments From Students and Management of Students’ Records are identified in this study. The results show that quality assurances practices amongst three groups are different. Profile Analysis used in this research shows that quality assurance practices amongst lecturers and support staff are parallel. Results also show that quality assurance practices of resident tutors have profiles that differ from the lecturers and support staff

    Enhanced soliton interactions by inhomogeneous nonlocality and nonlinearity

    We address the interactions between optical solitons in the system with longitudinally varying nonlocality degree and nonlinearity strength. We consider a physical model describing light propagation in nematic liquid crystals featuring a strongly nonlocal nonlinear response. We reveal that the variation of the nonlocality and nonlinearity along the propagation direction can substantially enhance or weaken the interaction between out-of-phase solitons. This phenomenon manifests itself as a slowdown or acceleration of the soliton collision dynamics in one-dimensional geometries or of the soliton spiraling rate in bulk media. Therefore, one finds that by engineering the nonlocality and nonlinearity variation rate one can control the output soliton location.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Physical Review

    Inferring Safe Maude Programs with \uc1TAME

    In this paper, we present \atame, an assertion-based program specialization tool for the multi-paradigm language Maude. The program specializer \atame\ takes as input a set \cA of system assertions that model the expected program behavior plus a Maude program \cR to be specialized that might violate some of the assertions in \cA. The outcome of the tool is a safe program refinement \cR' of \cR in which every computation is a good run, i.e., it satisfies the assertions in \cA. The specialization technique encoded in \atame\ is fully automatic and ensures that no good run of \cR is removed from \cR', while the number of bad runs is reduced to zero. We demonstrate the tool capabilities by specializing an overly general nondeterministic dam controller to fulfill a safety policy given by a set of system assertions
